(English version available in the end)

Principal’s Message
Dear teachers, students and parents,
I’m pleased to inform you that our Term 3 will commence this weekend (July 26th/27th). This term will run for a total of 9 weeks, with the final teaching day on September 20th/21st.
Since most of Term 3 falls during the winter season, the daily average temperature is relatively low and there are more wet days in winter, which can easily lead to flu and respiratory infections. Therefore, we hope everyone pays attention to hygiene and health. If you’re feeling unwell, please try to rest at home whenever possible.
Generally, during Term 3, Years 1–3 students will participate in a handwriting competition, Years 4–9 students will take part in recitation and speech contests, and Y10-12 students will engage in academic competitions.
I would like to emphasize that we organize these competitions not only to assess students’ Chinese language proficiency, but also to cultivate their thinking skills, sense of competition and to encourage their interest in learning Chinese. At the same time, we hope these activities will promote the development of our school’s campus culture and create a positive and uplifting learning environment. Details regarding the specific content and schedule of each competition will be announced separately.
During the past school holiday, we welcomed a visiting delegation of teachers from Wuxi No.1 High School in Jiangsu Province, China, led by Mr. Zhang Jianhua. Wuxi No.1 High School is a century-old prestigious school and a key secondary school in Jiangsu Province. In 2022, as part of the “Hundred Chinese Schools Paired Online” initiative in Jiangsu, Wuxi No.1 High School established a sister-school partnership with XJS, forming a friendly inter-school cooperation. This visit marked the first mutual exchange between the two schools. I introduced our school’s background and some basic information about our Chinese language teaching to the visiting teachers from China. While touring our Mt Waverley main campus, the delegation was warmly welcomed and graciously hosted by Ms. Karen Wade, Principal of Mt Waverley Secondary College, and Mr. Matt Sheehan, Head of the Junior School. The delegation visited various facilities of MWSC, including the Science and Technology Centre, Sports Hall, Music Centre and Library. During the morning tea, Ms. Wade, Mr. Sheehan and I had further discussions with the teachers from Wuxi. I believe this visit not only strengthened the ties between the two schools but also opened up opportunities for Wuxi No.1 High School to build relationships and collaborations with schools like Mt Waverley Secondary College.
During the past holiday, 23 of XJS teachers and students participated in the 2025 Chinese Culture Camp-Zhaoqing Camp. In Zhaoqing, a thousand-year-old historic city in Guangdong Province, they explored the city’s rich history and culture, learned various traditional cultural skills and experienced activities such as making Duan inkstones and wrapped zongzi. They also visited China’s first nature reserve—Dinghu Mountain—and admired the natural beauty of Seven Star Crags. In addition, they enjoyed delicious Cantonese cuisine, experienced the joy of group life and returned with wonderful memories. If you’re interested in reading the reports from the trip, please click to read.
I understand that many students are still hoping for the opportunity to participate in the Chinese Culture Camps and Chinese cultural study tours. I’d like to share that during the Term 3 holiday (September 23 to October 3), there will be a Chinese Culture Camp in Quanzhou, Fujian Province. Although places are limited, registration is still open—please click to sign up. In addition, there is a Chinese culture study tour to Yunnan scheduled for the December holiday and only a few spots remain. If you're interested, please click to register.
I wish everyone a smooth and successful Term 3 in both teaching and learning! See you on campus this weekend!
Yours sincerely,
Kevin Hu, Principal
